Tess removed her hands from where they had been covering her ringing ears and stared at them as they shook violently in front of her. She coughed as the smoke caught the back of her throat, the sound dulled and muted to her hearing. The side of her face felt strange and she raised her left hand and explored her cheek, recoiling as she registered the sensation of liquid under her palm. She drew the hand back sharply and looked at the blood sticking to it. Her hearing was returning and the shouts of the others began permeating through the whining in her ears. Raising her hand again she probed her cheek with her fingers, wincing at the pain. From what she could feel it seemed as though she had a big abrasion, not deep but sore. Looking around her through the thinning smoke, she saw Mitch on all fours trying to stand on shaking legs. One of the Firearms’ officers stumbled into the room, weapon dangling from his hand and his face a crimson mask as blood flowed freely from a massive gash on his forehead.

‘TESS. TESS. ARE YOU OKAY?’

She shook her head and followed the sound of the Colin’s shouting. She saw him in the corridor applying a dressing to the other Firearms officer’s arm with Kenny helping him. Pulling herself up by grabbing the edge of the desk, she stood on wobbly legs and staggered over towards the bleeding Firearms officer.

‘Colin, I’m okay. I’m going to help Mark here.’ She saw Colin look up and nod his acknowledgement before he yelled again.

‘MITCH. MITCH. HOW YOU DOING MATE?’

Tess heard Mitch’s reply that he was also okay just as she reached the Firearms officer and gently took the rifle from his unresisting grip. She placed the weapon on a desk and settled him in a chair.

‘Mark, you’re going to be fine. It looks like it’s just a big cut but it’s bleeding a lot because it’s the scalp. Don’t open your eyes till I’ve cleaned you up or you’ll get blood in them okay?’

She watched as he nodded and then she grabbed some sterile wipes and a dressing from the medical pack that was open beside her monitor. Working quickly, she cleaned the constable’s face and wound, making soothing noises when she saw him wince with the pain. As she applied the dressing, she heard Mark chuckle before he spoke.

‘Glad I didn’t make a bet with you on this. You were bang on the money Tess. They came for him and they came just the way you said they would.’

‘No Mark. Even I didn’t think they’d come like that. That was fucking awful. I’m not even sure exactly what they did.’

The Firearms’ officer cleared his throat. ‘Looks like they used two explosive breaches, one as a diversion and the other as the entry to get their guy. When it didn’t go as planned, they opened up with automatic weapons.’

Tess nodded as she checked the dressing. ‘That makes sense I suppose.
